Show Us Your Favourite Piece Of Victoria’S Coast & Win!The Minister for Environment, John Thwaites, welcomed summer today by inviting Victorians to head for the coast with their cameras, as part of the Coastal Snapshots photo competition. By Minister for Environment - 2nd December 2005 - Back to News The Minister for Environment, John Thwaites, welcomed summer today by inviting Victorians to head for the coast with their cameras, as part of the Coastal Snapshots photo competition.
The competition is being run as part of National Coastcare week, which this year will run from December 1 with the theme "unique species, unique spaces".
"Victoria has 2,000 kilometres of coastline and as well as amazing scenery it contains many plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world," Mr Thwaites said.
"So we want Victorians to show us what makes the coast special for them, whether it's a beach, a pier, a plant or a fish.
"The top of a sand dune or deep under water, the choice is yours, just send in a picture that illustrates why our coast is a special place, and you could be in the running for some great prizes," he said.
The photo that’s judged the best will win its owner a new Ipod Nano. There are also a dozen passes to the Melbourne Museum and the Melbourne Aquarium to be won.
The 12 best photos submitted will be featured and credited in the 2006 Coastal Snapshots calendar, which will be available free of charge at popular coastal locations, and will be given to participants of the annual Summer by the Sea program.
"Summer by the Sea features over 350 fun educational activities along the Victorian coast," Mr Thwaites said.
"The idea of the Coastal Snapshots calendar is to remind people that caring for our coast is a year-round job.
"If you’re looking for inspiration, try capturing your own photo of Victoria’s marine state emblem, the Weedy Seadragon, which is one of the most unusual, distinctive and attractive creatures in Victorian waters – photos of this creature will be considered very favourably."
For competition details and to submit your favourite coastal snapshot go to www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au
Don’t forget to include your full name with details of what your photo depicts. Please also include a contact phone number. Entries close at 5.00pm on Tuesday 20th December 2005.
