Six Month Trial On Traralgon Taxi Rank Security StartsA six-month trial initiated by Latrobe City Council in partnership with other agencies, targeting inappropriate behaviour and violence in Traralgon, has commenced. By Latrobe City Council - 12th December 2006 - Back to News The trial entails licensed security operators now monitoring the Traralgon taxi rank for trouble-makers on Saturday nights.
The trial follows perceptions that Traralgon is unsafe at night or in the early morning hours on the weekend.
Latrobe City’s manager City Services, Peggy Stevenson, said the perceptions have been supported by a number of incidents occurring at the taxi rank perpetrated by some who were previously drinking at the various entertainment venues.
"A number of incidents occurred at the taxi rank and council officers prepared a report for consideration by council after investigating what other local governments and cities have done to address similar issues.
"The most common tool noted was supervised taxi ranks during peak evening times. Many cities with similar concerns have also invested in closed circuit television in problem areas, particularly the CBD," Ms Stevenson said.
"A number of additional safety measures were also identified which ranged from lighting, signage, taxi rank location and police presence. In regards to the police presence, it was identified that police numbers are significantly lower than expected given Traralgon has been identified as the entertainment capital of Gippsland."
Ms Stevenson explained that the Traralgon Chamber of Commerce, taxi accord and operators, late night venue operators, and representatives from the Victoria Police and Latrobe City met several times to discuss the issues and potential solutions. "The representatives determined to cooperate as this is a community issue, not a single organisational issue," Ms Stevenson said.
"It was agreed in principle for all parties to contribute to a six-month trial program of supervision at the taxi rank on Saturday nights, continuing through the early Sunday morning hours.
Among other allied initiatives, Latrobe City will write to the appropriate minister to request additional police staffing and presence.
"Latrobe City, in cooperation with Traralgon Chamber of Commerce, will also contact business and property owners on Franklin Street, and abutting the laneway behind Franklin Street, requesting that they increase or add appropriate lighting to minimise property and personal risks," Ms Stevenson explained.
"Additionally, Latrobe City will increase the signage in and around the Traralgon CBD to identify areas where open consumption of alcohol is prohibited, in accordance with the Local Law," Ms Stevenson added.
Outcomes of the trial will be reported to council at the completion of the six months.
