Feasibility Study For Gippsland Synthetic Hockey

Latrobe City together with the Baw Baw and South Gippsland Shires is embarking on a feasibility study to investigate the potential development of a synthetic hockey surface within the Gippsland area.

By Latrobe City - 8th May 2007 - Back to News

With financial support from the Victorian Government, the feasibility study will investigate current and potential hockey participation numbers, review existing facilities, provide clear justification on the need to develop a synthetic playing surface and make recommendations on the type and potential locations for such facilities.

Latrobe City deputy mayor, Cr David Wilson, said that hockey in Latrobe City and Baw Baw is a very popular activity, but due to the lack of a synthetic surface, players are often forced to travel to metropolitan areas to enjoy the benefits of playing and training on a synthetic surface.

"A synthetic surface provides the opportunity for a higher quality game and improved skill development as the surface is more consistent than the current grass facilities," Cr Wilson explained.

Latrobe City’s recreation manager, Ian Murphy, said that in developing a plan from the study, an appointed consultant will hold discussions with players, clubs and associations across Gippsland to gain a better understanding of the needs of the area.

"A draft report will then be prepared making recommendations on how the development of such a facility can be progressed; with all interested parties having the opportunity to provide comment on this draft document," Mr Murphy said.

"The final version of this plan will then be used to attempt to attract funding to allow for the development of the recommended facilities.

"Clubs and associations will be contacted directly to provide input into the study with further information available from the recreation departments at Latrobe City, Baw Baw and South Gippsland Shires. Any players or officials not directly linked to local clubs are encouraged to contact the council to be involved in this process.
