Hall of Fame inductees announced WednesdayAn initial ten sporting legends will be inducted into the Latrobe City Sporting Hall of Fame at a gala dinner and presentation to be held at the Turfside Function Centre in Moe on Wednesday. By Latrobe City Council - 14th March 2006 - Back to News The Latrobe City Sporting Hall of Fame serves to recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to the development of a variety of sports at a local, nation and international level.
The night will be held to coincide with the opening of the Commonwealth Games, and in particular, the opening of the Gippsland Live Site at the Moe Racecourse.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, explained that the ‘Hall of Fame’ is a system of awards that recognises both on-field and off-field achievement.
"The inductees come from a wide spectrum of the sporting community and may have served the game in many capacities – as players, administrators, coaches or as umpires or judges," Cr Price said.
"The initial ten inductees are a select group of people and no doubt we have just scraped the surface in terms of recognising our local champions.
"To this end, Latrobe City will call for nominations every two years and although this group will remain ‘the elite’, we expect that we will induct more people in the future," Cr Price said.
Along with the inductions, a highlight of the night will be the appearance of guest speakers Bob Skilton and Greg Champion.
Former South Melbourne football star Bob Skilton is a triple Brownlow medallist and is himself a legend of the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Also providing entertainment on the night will be Greg Champion of the Coodabeen Champions.
Funding has been provided for Latrobe City’s Hall of Fame through the State Government's ‘Get Involved’ grants program.
Latrobe City's own ‘Get Involved’ team is made up of a cross section of the community and has been actively involved in the Hall of Fame project.
"I know that all those who have been involved in deciding who Latrobe’s first ten inductees will be, have been keeping details of the announcement close to their heart, and will be glad when all is revealed on Wednesday," Cr Price added.
