‘The King’s Speech’ at Latrobe Performing ArtsLatrobe Performing Arts presents ‘The King’s Speech’ (M) on Monday 1 August at 1pm and 7pm as part of its National Film & Sound Archive Big Screen Film Series. By Latrobe City - 27th July 2011 - Back to News ‘The King’s Speech’ is a moving and highly acclaimed film, portraying King George VI’s determination to overcome his stammer and lead his nation during a time of crisis. The film won four Academy Awards and a host of other awards and nominations.
The film recounts the story of King George VI (Colin Firth) and his impromptu ascension to the throne following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce). To overcome a severe stutter he engages the help of Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) who helps the unsure monarch become worthy of being King. The film was produced by Australian Emile Sherman, directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler.
Latrobe City’s performing arts and venues coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said that the film will screen twice.
"We anticipate that the demand for tickets will be high due to the powerful performances from Colin Firth as King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue. The film attracted widespread critical acclaim. Screening the movie at both 1pm and 7pm will enable all interested community members to attend.
"The film is the fourth and final movie in the successful Big Screen Film Series and we are currently in the early stages of putting together the program for next year," Ms Roberts explained.
‘The King’s Speech’ will screen at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre, Traralgon on Monday 1 August at 1pm and 7pm. Tickets are free for performing arts members and $5 for non-members and can be booked at the Box Office on 5176 3559. For the matinee performance, tea and coffee will be available from 12 noon; for the 7pm performance, the bar will open from 6pm.
