Be Inspired With Seniors’ Activities In LatrobeThis year’s Victorian Seniors’ Festival with the theme ‘Be Inspired’, will be celebrated through a week jam-packed with a wide variety of events including a country concert, By Latrobe City - 8th October 2007 - Back to News multicultural concert, leisure day, ballroom dancing display, health and wellbeing expo and a heritage bus tour, to name but a few.
Visit Latrobe Leisure Moe/Newborough, Morwell or Churchill on Tuesday 9 October and enjoy free entry to try some of the fantastic facilities and fitness programs on offer for the older person. There will be fully qualified fitness instructors on hand to discuss any health or rehabilitation requirements, explain how fitness programs can be designed specifically for the ageing individual, and provide information on how to get started in fitness training.
On Wednesday 10 October a free double-bill concert takes place at Kernot Hall, Morwell. Darryl Cotton will perform as part of the Rural Ambulance Victoria Country Concert which commences at 11am and the announcement of Latrobe City’s Senior Citizen of the Year will follow.
The Multicultural Concert which commences at 1pm, is guaranteed to have audiences tapping their feet, clapping in time to the music or even trying a bit of belly dancing themselves! MCs for the concert, Marcello D’Amico and Anthea Sidiropoulos, will introduce a variety of artists and lead the audience on a world journey of music.
Basket lunches will be available on the day for $2.50. Tickets for both concerts and for the lunches should be booked in advance by calling the Box Office, telephone 5176 3559. A limited number of performance tickets may be available at Kernot Hall on the day.
At 1.30pm on the Wednesday, fans of ballroom dancing can visit the Morwell East Senior Citizens Centre in Vary Street to enjoy a ballroom dancing display. No bookings required – gold coin entry.
One of the highlights of the festival will be the Safety, Health and Wellbeing Expo on Thursday 11 October at Kernot Hall between 10am and 4pm. A number of local organisations, service providers and government departments will feature stands and exhibits at the expo, which is aimed at sharing information on services and products that can assist in the safety, health and wellbeing of our older community. The expo should attract not only those who recognise themselves as senior citizens, but those in their late fifties or sixties who may be approaching retirement and qualifying for a number of accompanying benefits that come with age.
The Council of the Ageing (COTA) will present a session ‘Beyond Maturity Blues’ which discusses depression, risk factors, signs, symptoms and support available. There will also be COTA sessions on the ‘quality use of medicines’ and on ‘generics’. Throughout the day the expo will also feature live music from country musicians; song and dance routines from local group ‘The Toe Tappers’; and Rock and Roll dancers. Special guest will be Val Jellay. There’s no entry fee to the expo, and there will be free coffee, tea and cake for those attending.
A Latrobe Regional Gallery Heritage Bus Tour on Friday 12 October, facilitated by the Latrobe Regional Gallery and Latrobe’s historical societies, will include visits to Powerworks, Traralgon Historical Society, the Old Brown Coal Mine Museum, Gippsland Heritage Park and the Latrobe Regional Gallery. The heritage bus tour departs at 10am. Telephone 5128 5700 to book.
Also at 10am, the Morwell Senior Citizens Centre in Maryvale Crescent will host the Gippsland Multicultural Services Morning Tea. An assortment of delicious foods from across many nations will feature; with entertainment being provided by the colourful and melodic Italian Singers. No bookings required – gold coin entry.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Tony Zimora, said the festival in Latrobe is an enjoyable way of disseminating information to older residents in the community and ensuring that there are events and programs tailored specifically to their needs.
"I look forward to meeting and chatting to many seniors at the different events through out the week and hope that this year’s program does what it aims to do – inspire and promote health and wellbeing for our senior community," Cr Zimora said.
