Latrobe Valley a future film destinationThe Latrobe Valley Ministerial Taskforce Marketing Advisory Panel (MAP) recently contracted a Film Location Manager to undertake a photographic profile of the region. By Latrobe City Council - 9th March 2004 - Back to News The profile which is now listed on the Melbourne Film Office web site is the first step in attracting film and TV Productions to the Latrobe Valley.
A series of over 1200 images has been compiled to give prospective film and TV Commercial producers a comprehensive overview of what the Latrobe Valley has to offer.
Location Manager Mark Farr of ‘The Best Locations By Farr’ did the survey work and was impressed by the range of options available: ‘The Latrobe Valley is an amazingly diverse region and offers a great cross section of possible locations with good infrastructure to back up film crew requirements. This project will put the Latrobe Valley on the map for the film industry.’
Richard Hancock Chairperson of the MAP said: ‘This project has developed directly from one of the 28 tactics identified in the Latrobe Valley Marketing and Communication Strategy. We are delighted with the work that Mark Farr has done and intend to look at ways that we can utilise the extensive library of images listed on the Melbourne Film Office Website to promote the region more effectively’.
Sandra Sdraulig, CEO of Film Victoria said: ‘Film Victoria’s online Locations Library receives an average of 65 visitors a day. Prior to the initiative of the Latrobe Valley MAP and the work of Mark Farr, the Locations Library included a limited range of images from the Latrobe Valley area. We are impressed with the range and depth of potential film locations in the Latrobe Valley and look forward to working with the Latrobe Valley MAP in promoting the region as a filming destination.’
The Film Victoria Online Locations Library is used by location managers and producers across Australia and overseas and is a first point of reference for filmmakers seeking suitable locations.
It is widely recognised that film productions can have a very positive economic impact on regional areas. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that for every dollar spent by a film production company, their expenditure generates an economic benefit to the region of $2.50. With multimillion dollar budgets, productions such as the US television miniseries SALEM’S LOT, starring Rob Lowe, that filmed recently in Creswick, Woodend and Whittlesea, provide a boost to the local economy during filming and significant promotional and tourism benefits.
Mr Hancock concluded: ‘The ultimate goal is the promotion of the Latrobe Valley as a film friendly destination. We have already fielded some inquiries, and we will continue to encourage film makers to take another look at the Latrobe Valley as a potential destination’.
