Library users and City staff bring some festive cheer

Library users in Latrobe City have donated more than fifteen-hundred food items to the Salvation Army for distribution throughout Latrobe City during the holiday season.

The donations were part of an innovative ‘Cans for Fines’ campaign conducted by the Latrobe City Library Service, where $2 was deducted from any overdue library fines for every can or non-perishable food item that customers donated.

Acting Manager Citizen Services, Jeanette Moore, said the donations this year more than doubled last year’s contributions. "That’s not to say there were double the amount of outstanding fines due in 2005, because that’s not the case. It’s just that many more library customers with no overdue fines got into the spirit of the program this year by making food or cash donations," Ms Moore explained.

Staff across the organisation also contributed through their own initiative to making Christmas brighter for others, with a presentation on Monday to the Salvation Army, of food and toys they had collected at their offices across the municipality in the lead up to Christmas.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, thanked the public and staff who had made donations during the campaigns.

"Christmas and New Year places a huge additional burden on the resources of organisations such as the Salvation Army. It’s wonderful to see local generosity resulting in substantial donations to those resources," Mr Buckley said.
