The Latrobe Regional Gallery has scored a coup by securing the long term loan of the Vizard Foundation Collection of the 1990s. The collection contains works by some of Australia’s finest contemporary artists.

Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that at the end of the twentieth century, the pageantry of the 1988 Bicentenary of European settlement and the spectacle of the 2000 Olympic Games framed a decade in which images of national identity were proposed, debated, disputed and discarded.

"Grappling with the diversity of history and experience, artists challenged Australians to explore multiple versions of identity in subtle, confrontational and witty artworks. The Vizard Foundation Collection traces the efforts of fifty one artists facing the contradictions of the late twentieth century," Ms Tegart explained.

"The collection brings together artworks that offer challenging responses to challenging questions. Traversing the city and the landscape, the present and the past, traditional and new media the Vizard Foundation Collection presents a survey of the best in recent Australian art," Ms Tegart said.

Ms Tegart added that artists included in the collection were 2003 Australian representative at the Venice Biennale, Patricia Piccinini; 1999 Australian representative at the Venice Biennale, Howard Arkley; and artists Jon Campbell and Tim Jones who have spent time at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University.

"The Vizard Foundation Collection of the 1990s is a product of the vision and generosity of Steve Vizard and the Vizard Foundation. It is usually housed at the Ian Potter Museum at the University of Melbourne, which is closed for eighteen months for renovations," Ms Tegart explained.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that the Latrobe Regional Gallery was chosen by the Ian Potter Museum to house the collection because of the upgrade of the Gallery, which now conforms to international museum standards.

"Following its extensive renovations, the Gallery is one of the finest regional galleries in Australia and it is very exciting that we are now able to attract exhibitions of this stature," Cr Middlemiss said.

"We are delighted that this contemporary collection of artworks can be enjoyed by the people of Latrobe and the many visitors to the Gallery from surrounding regions," Cr Middlemiss said.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery will be curating exhibitions from the collection over the next eighteen months. The first exhibition features Indigenous artists from the collection, including Gordon Bennett, Tracey Moffatt and Emily Kngwarray. The exhibition which features painting and photography will be on display until Sunday 6 June.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am-4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
