School precincts being made saferWork is starting shortly in precincts around Morwell Park Primary School, Grey Street Primary School in Traralgon and St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in Traralgon, as part of Latrobe City’s initiative to improve safety around school areas. By City of Latrobe - 22nd March 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that safety will be improved for Grey Street and St Michaels students, with pedestrian refuges to be constructed in Franklin Street and Seymour Street; allowing pedestrians crossing the road to cross one lane and stand safely in the middle, before crossing the other lane.
"Students at Morwell Park Primary School will also benefit from the infrastructure works, with improvements to the school crossing in Vary Street. This will be redesigned with a lowered kerb to allow improved access for people with a disability and parents pushing prams. A speed hump with a concrete kerb which will create a half-road closure and will also reduce vehicle speed on the Waterhole Creek side of the school area," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed said that since Council had adopted the Road Safety Strategic Plan 2001-2004, many of the municipality’s primary schools have been assessed for safety improvements and a number of works have been carried out.
"Since 2001, Council has been active in consulting with schools, parents and local residents to determine where improvements to safety in school precincts can be made. Once an assessment has been made, a report is presented to Council for consideration.
"We hope to have completed the assessment and works on primary schools by early next year and we will then concentrate on secondary colleges, followed by preschools," Cr Lougheed explained.
Latrobe City’s Traffic Engineer, Ray Bright, said that work had been progressing on primary schools around the municipality for some time.
"For example, in 2003 at the Elizabeth Street Primary School in Moe, we restricted two-way traffic during designated school traffic times in James Street. Other measures already undertaken to improve safety at other schools have been changes in parking zone times, installation of pick-up and drop-off zones, installation of parking restriction signs, the creation of new footpaths, and in one case, an extension to an existing bus zone," Mr Bright explained.
"In other areas, a school crossing is about to be constructed in Main Street, Yinnar for the primary school. There will also be a school crossing installed at Coleman Parade, Churchill for the Churchill Primary School," Mr Bright explained.
Cr Lougheed said that safety around schools had always been a high priority for Latrobe City, and every improvement that could be made, would be done so.
"Each recommendation brought before Council has been looked at on its own merit and discussed with relevant stakeholders before implementation. There has been very little objection to works being carried out as the safety of children is paramount. They are our future and their safety is our first concern," Cr Lougheed concluded.
