Encyclopaedia Britannica Online Available To Library UsersThe Latrobe City Library Service has recently added Encyclopaedia Britannica Online to its suite of online databases available to library users. By Latrobe City Council - 24th June 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City’s Library Programs Officer, Noeline Grayden said that library patrons could access appropriate information from four encyclopaedias to suit their requirements.
"In addition, they can use the site’s dictionary, thesaurus and full text journals and magazines. Encyclopaedia Britannica Online allows patrons to search across a selection of articles, illustrations, video and media clips, and a world atlas.
"Of particular interest is Britannica Spotlights which provides in-depth, multimedia-rich tours through selected topics such as the Great Barrier Reef, tornadoes, the Titanic and Normandy 1944," Ms Grayden explained.
"The site also includes an internet guide providing links to other websites that have been rated, reviewed and recommended by Britannica editors. The exceptional depth of coverage makes the search for information using Encyclopaedia Britannica Online, faster, easier and more efficient," Ms Grayden said.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that library users across the municipality would also be treated to a much bigger and broader range of resources that will be purchased for all libraries in the next financial year,
"Council has allocated a further $150,000 in the Capital Works budget for these resources. All these services have the effect of empowering the community, opening avenues of research and adding easily accessible, valuable resources for everyone," Cr Lougheed said.
Ms Grayden added that other databases currently available online through Latrobe City Libraries include NewsStand which provides full-text access to Australian Newspapers, Science and Business.
"Not only can library patrons access these comprehensive resources from their local library, but it is also possible to access the sites from their home computer via the internet at http://home.vicnet.net.au/~lvlib. For those who need a little help to get started, library staff members are always happy to help customers with searches and enquiries," Ms Grayden concluded.
