A number of upgrades at East Gippsland Water's Lakes Entrance Water Recycling Plant have either been completed or are ongoing to help reduce odour and improve recycled water quality. The desludging project that commenced at the end of 2023 is now complete, with 604 tonnes of sludge removed and transported to our storage areas at Bruces Track near Kalimna and Newmerella towards Corringle.

The sludge will be turned into biosolids which can then be treated and used safely for agricultural purposes. The refurbishment of two primary sedimentation tanks, including the installation of odour covers, was also completed recently to improve the reliability of waste water treatment services for customers and reduce emissions from the plant.

East Gippsland Water Executive Manager Sustainability and Infrastructure, Neville Pearce said, "It is great to see these improvements and upgrades happening at our Lakes Entrance Water Recycling Plant to help reduce odour. These upgrades have been to ensure the ongoing reliability of the treatment plant."

In recent weeks, a new inlet screen, transfer conveyor, wash press and switchboard was installed. The inlet screen is used to remove solids and objects that shouldn't be there such as wipes, plastic, paper and other materials from sewage received from customers in Kalimna, Lakes Entrance, Lake Bunga and Nowa Nowa.
