Workshop for those going into business A workshop designed to assist anyone interested in starting up their own business will be conducted by Latrobe City Council this Thursday 21 April, at the corporate headquarters in Commercial Road Morwell. By City of Latrobe - 15th April 2005 - Back to News
According to Invest Latrobe Investment Manager, Leo Billington, the workshop will help people make informed decisions about going into small business.
"Going into small business for the first time requires a great deal of planning and preparation. There are many people who have the desire to be their own boss and follow a particular passion in business. However, the excitement and enthusiasm of going into business, can unfortunately be overshadowed by the lack of planning," Mr Billington said.
"This workshop will help people evaluate their business skills, assess how they may be able to finance a prospective business proposal, and understand forward planning for the future.
"The workshop, funded by the Minister for Consumer Affairs from the Estates Guarantee Fund and coordinated by the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development as the ‘Under New Management’ program, will deal with the essential elements to be understood before opening a new business for the first time."
Margie Norder, who in partnership with Sue Embry, has just opened one of Morwell’s newest small businesses, Alfresh2Go; said they had taken on board the strong accent on preparation before starting their business venture.
"We gave plenty of thought to what we really wanted to do. In particular, we first listened to others to help determine if there was a gap in the market. Additionally, we thoroughly researched the existing market to make sure our ideas for a food related business were viable," Ms Norder said.
"Finding a suitable location, preferably one with unique features, was also part of our preparation. Criteria such as cost, centrality and presentation all became important considerations. We also put a staged, year-by-year strategic plan in place to make sure our business is sustainable all year around."
"I would encourage anyone considering going into business to attend these workshops and learn what is available and where to go for information. It is all about thorough preparation and groundwork," Ms Norder said.
The Going Into Business workshop commences at 5pm on Thursday 21 April, costs $20, and finishes at 8.30 pm. Participants will receive a detailed workbook detailing finance, planning and marketing advice.
Bookings are essential. For further information, please contact Leo Billington, telephone 0407 541 258.
