Latrobe City’s tree and road maintenance crews were kept busy on Friday night into Saturday following the wild weather that saw flash flooding and heavy winds across the municipality.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen said that the crews should be congratulated on their efforts, ensuring that the safety of the public was top of the list.

"The crews responded in a timely manner and worked with other agencies to ensure that incidents were dealt with efficiently and with safety in mind. Having a road closed for some time may be an inconvenience, but it is essential that trees or other obstacles are removed in a safe manner or that people do not put themselves at risk by driving through floodwaters.

"I would like to congratulate the officers involved who worked through the night in appalling conditions to ensure the community’s safety," Cr Vermeulen said.

Latrobe City’s manager recreation culture and community infrastructure, Grantley Switzer, said that several roads were closed for a time and fallen trees had to be removed.

"The weather event kept the on call crews busy attending to road closures in Creamery Road, Yinnar, Old Melbourne Road, Morwell, Whittakers Road, Traralgon and Morwell River Road, Boolarra South; water over many roads around Latrobe City and trees over roads in Yallourn North. All roads have since been reopened.

"There were reports of flooding or leaks at Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough and the Traralgon Sports Stadium which caused some disruption to scheduled sports matches over the weekend but all venues are open for business as usual now," Mr Switzer concluded.
