Who will you nominate for the 2002 Bass Coast Australia Day Awards? Nominations will open on 9 October, so it’s time to start thinking about those local people and events that contribute to our community.

Entries are invited in all four categories – Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, and Community Event of the Year.

Cr. Miranda Sage, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council, explained that nominees for Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year must be residents of the Bass Coast Shire and must have made a positive contribution to the local community by donating their time to help other people.

"They may have organised or completed community projects, or been involved in community organisations," said Cr. Sage. "The awards recognise outstanding service over the last year, or even over a long period of time."

Previous nominees are encouraged to enter.

"In the past few years the nominees have been of such a high standard that we found it difficult to choose the final winner," explained Cr Sage."We would love to receive entries from people have were nominated previously as well as new nominees."

Last year’s Bass Coast Citizen of Year winners were Joan and Ken Chegwidden from Daylston. They won the award for their commitment and contribution to the local community through years of volunteer work.

Nominees for Young Citizen of the Year must be under 26. Last year’s Young Citizen of the Year Award went to Melanie Buitenhuis and Alisha Gartland, Newhaven College students who organised a one-day youth music festival as part of a Year 10 project. Called "Beefstock", the concert aimed to raise funds for juvenile diabetes research.

The Community Events category recognises the importance of community events in Bass Coast. Last year’s winner was the Human Powered Vehicle Grand Prix, which mixed learning with fun and gave young people a chance to demonstrate their skills and achievements.

Nomination forms and criteria for the 2002 Bass Coast Australia Day Awards will be available from all Council Service Centres from 9 October or phone (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311. Nomination forms can also be downloaded from the website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au.

Nominations must be made on the official nomination form, and can be submitted by groups, individuals or an organisation.
