Youth Band Concert To Feature At Kernot HallLatrobe City Youth Band concert at Morwell’s Kernot Hall to raise money for their trip to Japan and China By Latrobe Shire - 21st February 2003 - Back to News Latrobe City Youth Band will hold a concert on Saturday 1 March at Morwell’s Kernot Hall to raise money for their trip to Japan and China. The money raised from the concert will be shared between the twenty-eight members of the band heading to Takasago and Taizhou in April.
The Youth Band tour will give members of the group an opportunity to perform for new audiences whilst experiencing different and exciting cultures. They will travel throughout Japan and China, learning about traditional music and performing in a variety of places during their visit to the two countries.
Band members are looking forward to staying in the foreign countries and learning about Japanese and Chinese culture and language. However, playing with the Youth Bands in Takasago and Taizhou will be a highlight for everyone.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, supports the Youth Band’s tour to Takasago and Taizhou and said that it will be a cultural experience for the band members whilst also promoting Latrobe City in its Sister Cities.
"When the Youth Band goes over to Japan and China they will be representatives of Latrobe City and will be wearing the corporate colours on their uniforms," Cr Hanning said. "They will be demonstrating the talent that Latrobe City has to offer and also promoting the municipality to two cities that Latrobe conducts a great deal of business with."
"The Youth Band will also engage in a cultural and musical exchange by performing for the Youth Bands of Takasago and Taizhou, by listening to them and also by playing with them. It will be a great experience for the group," Cr Hanning explained.
Band members recognise the benefits that they will receive from their trip to Japan and China and have worked hard to raise funds to get there. They have conducted ‘work in progress’ performances at Lowanna College, busked, and held a raffle, lolly drive and a sausage sizzle. The tour is also partly funded by Latrobe City Council, which is sponsoring five youth band members, and has received sponsorship from Wight’s Motor World, Monash University Gippsland Campus and Chris Humphrey Office Systems.
"The Fundraising Concert will provide Latrobe City citizens with the opportunity to enjoy the music of the Youth Band whilst showing support for these talented local musicians and their overseas tour. I urge everyone to go and encourage Latrobe City’s Youth Band," Cr Hanning concluded.
The concert will begin at 8pm with drinks and snacks available from 7pm. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children and concessions and $25 for a family and can be purchased at the door or by phoning Anne or Gracie on 1300 367 700.
