Sister CityLatrobe City make new headway on their site with the Sister City page By Ray Kennedy - 12th October 2000 - Back to News A group of Japanese citizens disappeared within the Latrobe Valley. Lost amongst the vast attractions on offer they filmed every step of the way… Sometime later, their footage was found… and streamed over the internet on the brand new Sister Cities website!
The Sister City concept first arose sometime during the 1980’s after 400 Japanese families moved to Morwell during the creation and first operation of a Pilot Brown Coal Liquefaction Plan in the area.
With the time these families spent in the Latrobe Valley came a bridge of understanding and appreciation of the culture between two countries, and the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
In hopes of expanding the companionship and happiness that were born of the time the Japanese spent living here, the concept of creating a bond between the city of Morwell and a Japanese counterpart – Takasago - was raised.
The idea came following the Australian Sister City conference, and grew to become more than just a dream. With great support from all sides, a “Sister City” bond soon became very real.
Since the beginning of this relationship there have been many activities hosted on both sides to bring the two sectors closer and build on the connection that opened the door to new experiences which may never have happened.
The Sister City website – interlinked with the comprehensive Latrobe City site – celebrates the Sister City bond in style.
Well designed and easy to use with features like history, photo albums, presentations and some very cool video streaming, you can see why it has been such an asset to both communities.
History tells the story, from concept to agreement and the characters who surface along the way.
Photo Albums are the images to illustrate the story. The people, the places the experience... All the Kodak moments you may have missed before.
Presentations create a slide show visions. Sit back and give your mouse a rest as you effortlessly surf your way through.
Video Streaming brings the tour to life. The interaction between the two worlds on film unfolds before your eyes in your very own theatre.
