The grand final marked the conclusion of the successful program aimed at educating students about the benefits of regular physical activity and helping them become interested and motivated in staying active in order to experience a healthy life.
Latrobe City Councillor, Sandy Kam said that the grand final event was a lot of fun for all those involved, proving that keeping fit doesn’t have to be boring.
"The students had a chance to compete against each other in a friendly but challenging environment. Prizes of sports equipment were awarded to the schools that achieved outstanding results during the grand final and also to those with the highest average exercise times," Cr Kam said.
"Our thanks go to Vashon Weaver and fellow Latrobe City Pacers players, whose help ensured the success of this great project, not only on the grand final day, but throughout the course of the program," Cr Kam added.
The ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program involved visits to grade 3 and 4 students at 15 primary schools registered for the 2007 program. The visits were conducted by Vashon Weaver, Latrobe City Pacers player, and assisted by other Pacers’ players. During the year, participating students were given tally sheets to record the amount of physical activity and exercise they participated in over a two-week period.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora said that encouraging physical activity in our school children would provide significant benefits for the community in years to come.
"A healthier adult community will be one that will enjoy a vastly enhanced lifestyle. This particular program focused on helping children remain active and healthy, through physical education and listening programs, games and team building activities," Cr Zimora said.
"Latrobe City Council was pleased to support the 'Keep Fit Don't Sit' program and we are hopeful of engaging a wider range of schools next year," Cr Zimora concluded.
The ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program is supported by International Power Hazelwood, Latrobe City, Latrobe City Pacers, and GippSport.
