A Latrobe Innovation Festival Event, ‘There is Power in the Union’ was held at the Monash University Gippsland Student Union building at lunchtime and featured a live comedy act, wine and cheese tasting and a barbecue.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said the objective of the get-together was to raise student awareness of the attractions and services in the municipality and surrounding areas.

"There are over 2,500 students and staff at the Churchill campus and they form an important part of our community. A large number come from other regions of Victoria, or even from overseas, and while they are pursuing their courses this is their home. We want these students to feel an integral part of our community, to feel at home, not just from the perspective of enjoying what’s on offer, but feeling that any contribution they make to our society while they are with us is welcomed and appreciated," Cr Middlemiss said.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Hancock, said ‘There is Power in the Union’ had proved really worthwhile. "Students and staff showed a surprising degree of interest in the tourism, arts and events information provided, and commented very favourably on the number and variety of activities available within Latrobe and the surrounding region," Mr Hancock said.

"I hope that we can build on the ‘There is Power in the Union’ event and do it again on a regular basis. It demonstrates the value of building partnerships. With the first event being such a success, we are encouraged to work further with MUGSU. It has been a great team effort," Mr Hancock said.

"There is Power in the Union was featured in the Latrobe Innovation Festival Calendar because it demonstrated innovation in community building. One of the integral strengths of the Latrobe Innovation Festival is that it focuses on more than the commercialisation of ideas. While there is a strong business element to the festival, it is clear that innovation can and does occur across a much broader spectrum. The Latrobe Innovation Festival gives us the opportunity to celebrate innovation across the board," Mr Hancock added.
