By DSE - 12th January 2012 - Back to News From Cape Paterson to Mallacoota, visitors and locals of all ages are enjoying the free activities on offer
and the chance to learn more about our vibrant and beautiful coastal and marine areas.
DSE’s Regional Coastcare Facilitators Rhonda Gatt (East Gippsland) and Bruce Atkin (South Gippsland)
agreed that high visitor numbers across the region have helped boost the interest in Summer by the Sea.
Bruce Atkin said that Summer by the Sea provides a unique opportunity for people to explore, understand
and conserve the natural wonders of our spectacular coastline.
"We’ve had rockpool rambles, birdwatching, geology, dinosaur and beachcombing walks in South
Gippsland and in the east of the region: fishing, kayaking, coastal crafts, boat tours, junior biologist and
slide shows are all part of the program," he said.
Children especially enjoy being a junior biologist for a day, when they can take a closer look at marine
creatures using microscopes and learn more about the role the internal structures of these animals play in
their survival.
"Rockpool rambles and Junior biologist have proved as popular as ever with many youngsters taking the
chance to discover more about our marine creatures," Mr Atkin said.
"It's been terrific to see adults and children alike having fun experiencing what our coast has to offer and
learning about our local sea creatures and their environment."
