Tales of triumph inspire Latrobe City’s young leaders

Ten young leaders from Latrobe City learnt about the power of self-belief and teamwork at this year’s National Young Leaders Day conference held in Melbourne recently.

The annual event, which was celebrated in a variety of venues throughout Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, brought 1500 young people together to meet community leaders and inspire participants to reach personal goals.

Youth Development Officer, Leanne Vella, said that a variety of guest speakers challenged the young leaders to take their destiny into their own hands by considering how their actions will affect themselves and those around them.

"The participants came to realise that where they start out in life does not necessarily indicate where they will finish. They were motivated to aim to achieve something every day, and they heard accounts about ‘regular people’ who reached extraordinary feats in their own life," Ms Vella said.

"The participants listened to inspirational speeches by resident Today Show, Dolly and Cosmopolitan psychologist, Jackie Engal; Olympic Gold Medallist in Taekwondo, Lauren Burns; and Helimed One paramedic, Peter Davidson, who was involved in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race rescue in 1998-1999."

Ms Vella explained that the young leaders from Latrobe City were most touched by John Countis’ amazing personal tale.

"When John was born he was the size of a bottle of coke and he was unable to use his legs. Then, at an early age, he had his legs amputated after a severe bullying experience. His words of encouragement were truly inspirational for the young people and they really hit home that everyone has the strength inside themselves to do great things in this world," Ms Vella said.

"The day was a huge success. The Latrobe City participants came away from the event with the realisation that a great leader does not always need to know everything, but will always endeavour to achieve the best possible outcome. Everyone at the National Young Leaders Day conference certainly learnt something about life, leadership and the qualities needed to succeed in both of these areas," Ms Vella concluded.
