Raising Awareness On Road Safety

East Gippsland Shire Council and the Roadsafe East Gippsland committee are joining forces to raise community awareness of the safe use of motorised scooters and electric wheelchairs.

A booklet and video titled "Stay Safe" has been released and is available to be borrowed from the East Gippsland Shire Library.

Cr Michael Freshwater, Chairman of the East Gippsland Road Safety Strategy Steering Committee and long time member of Roadsafe East Gippsland, said the booklet and video would benefit all road users.

"They are ideal for those who require a motorised scooter or wheelchair for transport, but other road users will find them beneficial," Cr Freshwater said.

"The booklet contains information on keeping your scooter and wheelchair properly maintained, sharing the footpath with pedestrians, crossing roads safely, how to be easily seen by motorists and current road rules and laws.

"The video runs for four minutes and contains similar information in a visual format," he said.

The four community road safety councils in Gippsland (East Gippsland, Latrobe, Baw Baw and South Gippsland) have had input into the production.

"Members of all Roadsafe committees in Gippsland recommend both the booklet and video as valuable resources in raising community awareness on this particular aspect of road safety," Cr Freshwater said.
