Hawthorn Footy Club To Encourage Your Say On Traralgon Cbd SafetyA number of high profile senior AFL players from the Hawthorn Football Club will be visiting Traralgon on Wednesday 4 November By Latrobe City Council - 21st October 2009 - Back to News As part of an initiative to encourage young adults to have their say about safety issues affecting Traralgon’s Entertainment Precinct.
The Destination Traralgon – 2009 Safe Streets Summit will aim to involve young adults aged between 18 and 25 to have their say on the issue.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the summit is a great opportunity to have your say and share your views on safety issues in the Traralgon Entertainment Precinct, and provide feedback on the strategies implemented over the last 12 months.
"The event will also give Hawthorn fans the chance to get their 2008 Hawthorn Premiership merchandise autographed by the members from the Club," Cr Price said.
The 2009 Safe Street Summit follows on from a similar event held in October last year which highlighted issues such as poor lighting, Police presence, drugs, underage people congregating in the Central Business District and access to transport.
These issues were presented in a report to the Traralgon Central Business District (CBD) Safety Committee, which comprises members from Latrobe City Council, Victoria Police, Traralgon Chamber of Commerce, Traralgon and District Liquor Accord, Latrobe Valley Bus Lines, Latrobe Valley Taxi Services and community members.
Latrobe City councillor and chair of the Traralgon CBD safety committee, Cr Rohan Fitzgerald, said that in response the committee has been working on a number of initiatives to address issues raised at the last summit.
Issues include the identification of priority areas within the Traralgon CBD for improved lighting, and a feasibility study for the implementation of CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) within the Traralgon Entertainment Precinct.
"The feasibility study identifies priority locations for CCTV installation and funding streams are currently being investigated," Cr Fitzgerald explained.
"Other initiatives include the introduction of the trial NightRider bus service, and the designation of the Traralgon CBD as an ‘Entertainment Precinct’ in October 2008, which gave police extra powers for addressing alcohol related antisocial behaviours.
"Latrobe City Council is committed to providing a safe community for all residents and visitors, and the Destination Traralgon – 2009 Safe Streets Summit will be a further opportunity to gain valuable insight into the issues of safety and the effectiveness of strategies implemented to date," Cr Fitzgerald added.
The Destination Traralgon – 2009 Safe Streets Summit will be held at the Traralgon Football Club Rooms from 7pm – 9pm on Wednesday 4 November 2009 (finger food provided).
To register your interest in attending or for more information please contact council’s community development officer, Wendy Hayne, on 1300 367 700.
