More Feet, Less Seat as DEECD Gets Active

Healthy Together Latrobe launched ‘Think on Your Feet’, a program that encourages local office workers to get up and move more at work whenever they can, for better health.

By Latrobe City - 14th October 2013 - Back to News

Speaking at the launch Latrobe Community Health Service Chief Executive Officer, Ben Leigh, said that the purpose of the "Think on Your Feet" program is to encourage all employees to spend less time sitting at work and more time being active.

Mr Leigh congratulated the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s (DEECD) Moe office for being involved in ‘Think on Your Feet’.

The DEECD Moe office is the first workplace to participate in the program, with employees marking the occasion with a celebratory walk around town.

"It doesn’t take a lot to change behaviour," said Mr Leigh.

"Lots of little things can add up to big results. Stand up when someone comes to talk to you at your desk, walk to the photocopier on the far side of the building, walk to the shop to get your lunch."

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Cr Sandy Kam said that making simple changes to the way we work is important as studies show that 77% of the working day is spent sitting.

"The additional steps that you take at work will help you to feel better, reduce stress, manage your weight and give you more energy both during and out of work hours. Supporting your employees to move more at work is also likely to increase workplace productivity.

Ms Nicola Stuart, Health Wellbeing and Engagement Manager at the DEECD Moe office said that the staff are looking forward to tracking their progress over the coming months.

"The health and wellbeing of our employees is a top priority. We are keen to create a culture that promotes and supports movement at work.

"We are also a competitive bunch and are keen to mount some competitions and challenges to increase everyone’s daily steps," Ms Stuart said.

Easy tips for moving more at work from the ‘Think on Your Feet’ program are:

· Take the stairs instead of the lifts

· Walk to the printer

· Stand up to talk on the telephone

· Take a brisk walk for your lunch break

· Eat lunch away from your desk

· Hold a walking meeting with your team

· Stand up during a meeting

Latrobe City Council and Latrobe Community Health Service have joined together to form Healthy Together Latrobe. The ‘Think on Your Feet’ program is jointly funded by the State Government of Victoria and the Australian Government.
