Northe launches petition: Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre – IT’S TIME!

Gippslanders are urged to add their voice to calls to develop a Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre (GRAC), following the launch of a petition calling on the Andrews Government to provide funds for its construction.

Member for Morwell and Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre – "It’s Time" committee chair Russell Northe launched the petition today in conjunction with members of the local community.

"The existing outdoor pool is substantially outdated and under-utilised, and has not had any significant investment since it’s opening in 1959," Mr Northe said.

"With a growing population of more than 28,000 residents, and given the recent closure of the privately owned Traralgon Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre "It’s Time" for this major project to be delivered."

Mr Northe said Latrobe City Council have previously adopted concept plans for the GRAC and prior to the 2014 election the Coalition pledged $9 million towards the construction of this facility.

"Unfortunately this same commitment has not been made by the current Andrews Labor Government," Mr Northe said.

"Such a facility would cater for recreational learn to swim, health rehabilitation, sport and recreation clubs, schools, families and competitive swimmers.

"There is enormous potential to expand on the number of participants and users which can only enhance health outcomes for many within our community," he said.

"But the development’s progression requires financial assistance from the State Government, and I call upon Daniel Andrews to support this important project as a matter of urgency."

Mr Northe said the community has previously demonstrated its support for the GRAC with 3,575 people having signed petitions, and once again the community is requesting Daniel Andrews listen to the voices of local residents.

Copies of the petition are available from Mr Northe’s electorate office located at 66 George Street, Morwell, Melina Bath’s electorate office Shop 2, 181 Franklin Street, Traralgon and hard copies are available for printing from Mr Northe’s website www.russellnorthe.com.au/petitions
