Local art woos Flower and Garden Show visitorsArtworks created by local artists recently enthralled thousands of visitors at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, which was held over five days last week at the historic Royal Exhibition Buildings in Carlton. By Latrobe City Council - 24th April 2006 - Back to News The specially designed display stand, at this world renowned garden extravaganza, represented a number of visual and musical artists from the Latrobe City area under the ‘’Creative Gippsland’ banner, which promotes cultural tourism activities in the Gippsland region.
Latrobe City’s tourism coordinator, Linda Brock, said that the many thousands of people who visited the Latrobe City stand, were eager to discover more about the creative talents of Gippsland artisans. "It was a fabulous opportunity to show off our many talented artists, craftspeople, musicians and performers at an international level," Ms Brock said.
"The impressive display featured a cultural theme ‘Sculpture in the Garden’ which presented artworks of several artists in a contemporary garden setting. Some of the sculptural works by artists residing within Latrobe City included ceramics from BNYM Indigenous Designs and wood sculpture by Jim Blucher.
"BNYM, a group formed of indigenous women local to the Morwell area, boasts a philosophy of producing the finest handmade and hand painted pottery and ceramics featuring indigenous Australian designs. Widely recognised, these artists produce a unique style of work based on contemporary cultural themes, images and inspiration from the natural environment. Artworks in the display reflected the artists’ backgrounds, cultural beliefs, spiritual awareness and individuality.
"Wood sculptures by Jim Blucher of Jeeralang Junction, featured pieces representing Australian fauna made from local Australian timbers. Jim Blucher uses the differing colours of local timbers in his designs, incorporating his local bush knowledge and an interest in the natural world. " Ms Brock added.
"To help people learn about our many galleries and artists, a new brochure called ‘Creative Gippsland – A guide to Arts, Culture and Heritage’ was distributed at the show.
"A myriad of artworks by Gippsland artists including visiting musicians, were also on display. The support given by the local arts community and local companies was fantastic, and the enthusiasm shown by the visiting public for the Creative Gippsland exhibits demonstrated the wealth of artistic talent in our community," Ms Brock concluded.
