History Made - Future Paved

On Sunday 7 May, the first Women's AFL match in Bass Coast was held at Dalyston Recreation Reserve: The Bass Coast Breakers vs Gippsland Maroons.

It was a well matched game. Bass Coast Breakers lead from the beginning with the first goal scored by Captain Sophie Bolding, followed by a another two Breakers Goals by Tayla Stahl-Smith and Emma Volard. The Maroons kept themselves well and truly in the game with Amy Harrison kicking two between the sticks and leaving only one goal and one point difference at half time.

A relentless third quarter saw no points scored by either team, it looked like it could go either way. With a final score of 40 to 12, Bass Coast broke through in the final quarter thanks to goal kickers Kate Edney (2 goals) and Sheryl Palmer.

In the process of making history, these women have also provided a pathway and platform for future generations. Perhaps the most powerful element was not watching the game, but watching the players at half and quarter time, with their young ones on their hip, or by their leg. For these little ones, women playing all kinds of sport, will be the norm.

There were many people involved in making Sunday happen. As coach Steve Kenny would say, 'it's the 1%'s that win the game in the end'. For every individual who lead the pack, there were many more in the background who did their 1% to help pave the way.

The clubs who encouraged and believed in Women's football, lending their resources and facilities; the babysitters who enabled mum to do her thing; the volunteers who cut oranges, refereed, assisted and kept time; the supporters who came out on the day to cheer and watch it all happen; the sponsors who provided financial support. To all of these people, and to those who lead with the initiative to dream and make it happen – Congratulations!
