Brindabella Airlines to commence air services between Latrobe City and Canberraerra based Brindabella Airlines will commence a five day per week air service between Canberra and Latrobe City on Monday 5 September. By Latrobe City Council - 11th August 2005 - Back to News The service will operate Monday to Friday leaving Canberra at 9.45am and arriving at the Latrobe Regional Airport at 10.45 am; with the return service leaving Latrobe at 11.15am and arriving in Canberra at 12.15pm daily.
In announcing the commencement of the service, Brindabella Airlines CEO Jeff Boyd said that services will be flown with 18 seat turbo-prop Metroliner aircraft, which cruise at 560 km/hr and feature a pressurised cabin.
"Brindabella Airlines is a QANTAS affiliate airline and passengers from Latrobe will be able to continue their journeys on any QANTAS service, making Sydney and points beyond readily accessible," Mr Boyd said.
"Brindabella is hosted in the QANTAS booking system and is part of the supporting Frequent Flyer program, so our passengers will be able to enjoy those benefits throughout the QANTAS network," Mr Boyd explained.
"In addition, Brindabella operates direct services from Canberra to Albury and Newcastle and will soon commence a service to Coffs Harbour, enabling passengers from Gippsland to access those destinations," Mr Boyd added.
"We have a vision of linking key Australian regions without the expense and inconvenience of traveling through state capital cities, and the new service from Gippsland is a definite step toward that vision," Mr Boyd concluded.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, welcomed the announcement of the Brindabella service start.
"This is great news! Council has always regarded a passenger air service between Sydney, Canberra and Latrobe as a key priority for our community and a vital service for our economy," Cr Lougheed said.
"The announcement is especially appropriate given the priority accorded to an airline service from the Latrobe Valley to Canberra and Sydney in the Gippsland Transport Strategy, which was released earlier this year."
Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Latrobe Regional Airport Board, Paul Buckley, said that Airport staff and tourism operators had been receiving numerous calls from prospective airline passengers since the former REX Airlines service ceased operating in mid 2003.
"Brindabella Airlines offers a formula which appears well suited to our route," Mr Buckley said.
"The Metroliner 18 seat aircraft is about the right size to meet current demand and Brindabella offers a real advantage through its affiliation with QANTAS. The Latrobe Regional Airport is only a short drive from Latrobe City townships and less than an hour’s drive from most of Gippsland’s major population centres.
"Once on the Brindabella flight you can be in Canberra in an hour and in Sydney in less time than it takes to drive to Melbourne," Mr Buckley said.
"The Airport Board has worked hard over the past two years to achieve a service to Canberra and Sydney and it is now vitally important that Gippslanders use the service whenever possible.
"Although Brindabella has committed itself to a twelve month trial on the Latrobe route, regular patronage is essential if the service is to be a success and retained. It is very much a ‘use it or lose it’ scenario," Mr Buckley added.
Brindabella Airlines intends to operate a proving flight from Canberra to Latrobe Regional Airport on Thursday 1 September. Gippslanders will be encouraged to welcome the Metroliner aircraft into Latrobe and attend an official launch of the new route prior to regular services commencing on Monday 5 September.
