Gippsland Helicopters Land At Latrobe Regional Airport

The Latrobe Regional Airport has recently welcomed Gippsland Helicopters to the airport precinct.

By Latrobe City - 1st July 2011 - Back to News

This vibrant new company recognised the gap in aviation helicopter training in Australia, specifically from east of Melbourne up to Sydney, and set about meeting the need.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that Gippsland Helicopters started as a sightseeing company in Lakes Entrance.

"It soon became apparent that the business could expand and that the population centre around the Latrobe Valley would make the best base to explore these new ventures. Gippsland Helicopters offer training from novice to commercial helicopter standard. In addition they can train the more experienced pilots to be flying instructors and provide a host of other qualifications as well.

"It’s wonderful that the Latrobe Regional Airport can accommodate this unique company. Gippsland Helicopters has really taken all the opportunities that being based at the airport precinct can provide," Cr White said.

Gippsland Helicopters Chief Flying Instructor, Terry Morgan, said that the company believed it was offering a unique experience in the region, providing a mix of recreational flying and training opportunities.

"The population base here, the good access links and the thriving Latrobe Regional Airport hub all help to serve our business well. It has been a great move for us.

"For those who see themselves moving into the world of helicopter ownership either individually, in partnership or as a business venture, Gippsland Helicopters can also source helicopters.

"Our training regime offers the opportunity to fly different helicopters. Training is initially conducted in the well-proven Bell47G (the ‘MASH’ helicopter) and then we move on to the Robinson R44, a very modern and well-credentialed helicopter.

"Age is no barrier, as students currently enrolled with Gippsland Helicopters range from 15 years of age to the over-fifties," Mr Morgan concluded.
