Liberals To Build New $2.5M Shooting Range

A Liberal Government will attract international level shooting competitions to Victoria, with the building of a new $2.5 million shooting range.

By Parliament of Victoria - 22nd November 2006 - Back to News

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said a Liberal Government was committed to continuing its support of shooting as a sport.

"A Liberal Government will spend $2.5 million building a multi-purpose shooting range suitable for hosting international level competitions," Mr Davis said.

"We will provide world class competition facilities which will be open for use by all Victorians and shooting organisations, that will not only further develop shooting as a sport but also educate shooters and the wider community about firearms safety.

"Our new range will be a multidisciplinary venue providing a place for shooters to practice their sport, along with a co-located education centre."

Mr Davis said the new shooting range would be built east of Melbourne and would coincide with the Liberal Party’s other initiatives aimed at supporting sporting shooters.

"Firearm license revenue will go towards funding the shooting range, which will be managed by a Liberal Government’s Victorian Firearms Safety Education Foundation (VFSEF)," he said.

"The Foundation will also promote firearm safety education both through the shooting range facility and in the wider community.

"A Liberal Government will also establish the Victorian Firearms Safety and Education Scheme, to be administered through the VFSEF, which will work to promote firearms safety among holders of firearms licenses and the public."

Mr Davis said the Liberal Party was the only political to put all its cards on the table and state it is 100% committed to retaining shooting and hunting, including the continuation of the traditional duck season.

"The Bracks Labor Government plans to abolish the traditional duck hunting season in 2007, and The Greens want to ban all recreational hunting.

"Given Labor’s deal with The Greens, hunters and sporting shooters must be aware that as part of the deal, Labor may implement The Greens policies to end all hunting."

A Liberal Government however, will establish a statutory Game Council to develop and oversee the implementation of strategic plans to secure hunting on a sustainable basis. Game hunting license fees will also be returned to the sport for conservation and game management purposes.

"We have also committed $6 million for the introduction of a fox bounty for the culling of foxes on farming properties, with a bounty of $10 per tail," Mr Davis said.

"A Liberal Government is committed to sporting shooters and making sure the sport continues on a sustainable basis."
