Council calls for community support for mobile phone recycling

Wellington Shire Council is calling all upon residents to donate their old mobile phones to leading environmental organisation, Clean Up Australia, for recycling as part of its new Clean Up Mobile Phones campaign.

By Wellington Shire Council - 22nd November 2004 - Back to News

This joint initiative between Clean Up Australia and the Aussie Recycling Program, sees usable phones being donated and sent overseas for re-sale in developing countries. Phones that are not reusable will be fully recycled, with its component elements being made available for re-use.

With an estimated ten million disused mobile phones circulating around the nation’s homes and offices, and Australians buying new mobile phones at the rate of nearly four million per year, this is a welcome move towards the prevention of long-term pollution through having toxic metals sitting in land fill sites.

Clean Up Australia will receive $3 for each mobile donated which will provide funds to inject into other environmental projects across Australia. It is also working to expand the initiative by seeking retail partners to act as collection centres for old mobile phones from the broader community.

To donate your phone or set up a collection in your office or retail outlet please telephone Clean Up Australia on (02) 9552 6177 or Wellington Shire Council’s Waste Management Co-ordinator, Stuart Malcolm on 1300 366 244 or visit the website at www.cleanup.com.au.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "This is a great opportunity for residents to dig out their old mobile phones and put them to good use while giving something positive back to the environment. By re-using or recycling these mobiles and their elements, we’re helping to save and preserve our resources as well as keeping potentially toxic ingredients safe."
