Volunteers needed for the ‘We Care’ visiting programLatrobe City’s ‘We Care’ visiting program is holding a three-day training session for the Traralgon area on 23, 24 and 25 May in the Function Room, Civic Precinct, Kay Street, Traralgon. By Latrobe City Council - 10th May 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that there was currently a waiting list of clients in the Traralgon area.
"These clients are waiting to meet new people and would love to have someone visit them on a regular basis, maybe to assist them with their shopping, or take them on a day trip, or even just to sit and chat over a cup of tea," Cr Lougheed said.
"The ‘We Care’ visiting program is invaluable in developing friendships between client and volunteer, boosting each other’s self-esteem and leading to a mutually rewarding experience," Cr Lougheed explained.
Cr Lougheed added that the program coordinators send out a newsletter to the volunteer every month, along with a communication sheet for the volunteer to fill out.
"On this communication sheet the volunteer can share any good news they would like us to know about. The feedback is generally really positive," Cr Lougheed said.
Examples of feedback include:
"I always look forward to visiting with my ‘We Care’ friend as much as I can, we have some good conversations." Traralgon volunteer.
"Took my friend to Port Albert for fish and chips, had a great day." Traralgon volunteer.
"My friend and I had a really great day out driving, she didn’t want to the day end." Traralgon volunteer.
"For those members of the community who have some spare time on their hands and enjoy meeting people, listening, chatting or sharing experiences then the ‘We Care’ visiting program may be for you. There are many older people in the Traralgon area just waiting for a friend to visit, so please contact Council today to volunteer," Cr Lougheed concluded.

Volunteers will need to have a form of ID, for example, driver’s licence, birth certificate or passport in order to compete the police check.
