Afl Premiers To Visit The ValleyThe 2010 AFL premiers, Collingwood Football Club, are coming to Latrobe City as part of the Telstra AFL Community Camps that will take place on 16 and 17 February 2011. By Latrobe City - 11th February 2011 - Back to News Now a tradition in the weeks leading into and during the NAB Cup, clubs visit communities throughout Australia to conduct training sessions and NAB AFL Auskick clinics, and visit schools, nursing homes, and hospitals. The camps also provide a great link between grassroots and professional levels of Australian Rules football.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that these camps provide a tremendous boost to communities and help young people to develop a stronger involvement in sport.
"The Telstra AFL Community Camps not only give the community the chance to see top level AFL players on the training track, but they also give local club administrators and coaches the opportunity to learn from the game’s elite.
"The camp will also allow Latrobe City to showcase our quality sporting facilities and I’m sure the Collingwood Football Club will enjoy their experience in our community," Cr White said.
Latrobe City chief executive officer, and avid Collingwood supporter, Paul Buckley, explained that the camp is certain to raise even more interest in the sport leading into the AFL season.
"Many local players are in the midst of pre-season training at the moment too and it’s a great opportunity for both Latrobe City football players and fans to witness the reigning AFL premiers up close as they prepare for Round One. Junior players will also benefit from the first-hand advice they receive at the clinics to be held by the elite players.
"After once again hosting an AFL preseason match last year, Latrobe City is excited about another great event coming to the community. Particularly Collingwood, as the club has a great following and I’m sure they will have big crowds watching their every step. The fact that they are currently the best club in the land and six of their 2010 premiership players are Gippsland Power graduates makes the visit even more special," Mr Buckley concluded.
During their time in Latrobe City Collingwood will be holding super clinics, making visits to nursing homes and participating in a Traralgon Football Club function. They will also be conducting a full training session at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve on Whittakers Road at 9.30am on Thursday.
