Municipal Fire Prevention Officer warns of dangerous season

Latrobe City’s Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, Lance King, has warned residents that the municipality could be facing another extremely dangerous fire season, and that permits to burn are required for any burning off.

By Latrobe City Council - 20th November 2003 - Back to News

"Last weekend’s hot conditions provided a timely warning to all property owners that wildfire is a very real threat this season and that we all need to ensure we reduce fire hazards now, to minimise the risk to lives and property this summer," Mr King said.

"While the declared fire danger period is not upon us as yet, a number of hazardous fires in and around the Latrobe Valley last weekend were assisted by dry conditions, high temperatures and strong winds. These placed us well and truly on notice as to what may lie ahead," Mr King said.

"The large fire at the weekend to the north west of Latrobe City along the Latrobe River beyond Willow Grove, is an indication that the forest has remained tinder dry despite rain.

"At the moment, grassland is still lush and green which reduces its potential as a hazard, but in the next few weeks as the grass cures it will become extremely dry. Spring rain has led to far more growth than last year. As such, when dry, the grass could present an even more dangerous scenario than last year," Mr King warned.

"Residents need to be mindful of having their property prepared and maintained in the event of wildfire. It’s extremely important that they do the necessary work now.

"Fire prevention notices are currently being issued throughout Latrobe City advising people of identified potential hazards and their own legal obligation to reduce the risks on their properties to protect themselves and their neighbours from the threat of fire.

"Information on how to reduce fire risks was published in this months Latrobe City Link publication or can be obtained from your Local CFA Brigade," Mr King added.

Mr King said that to assist residents to reduce risks on their property, Latrobe City will waive transfer station charges for the disposal of leaves, grass and small tree branches up to 100mm diameter for all City residents on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November 2003. All other rubbish, including vehicle tyres, is not included and will still incur a charge.

A ‘permit to burn’ is now required from the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer before any burning off. The ‘general’ permit to burn issued by Latrobe City through the local media at the end of the 2002-2003 fire season has now lapsed.

For further information and advice in relation to general fire prevention and preparation for the fire danger period, contact Latrobe City's Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, Lance King, telephone 1300 367 700, or the CFA.
