Join The Parade! All of Bass Coast will celebrate Wonthaggi’s 100th birthday on 20 March 2010, with a gala Street Parade and Garden Party, recreating the event held in the 1950s and 60s. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 5th February 2010 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Mayor, Cr Peter Paul, said that while the 100 year milestone might technically belong to Wonthaggi, the event was a way to show the world the great things Bass Coast has to offer.
"We have invited groups from all across Bass Coast to be involved in the Parade and Garden Party," explained Cr Paul.
"This is a community event. It is a way to commemorate the achievements of the last century and celebrate our future.
"There is so much happening over that weekend and we are expecting over 2,000 visitors to the area."
Cr Paul urged community groups and businesses from across the Shire to get involved.
"Being part of the Parade is a great way to promote your organisation," said Cr Paul.
"In the past, groups created the most extraordinary floats. I am looking forward to seeing how creative the entries will be this year.
"A float isn’t the only option though. You may have a mascot or want your members to walk or march in the Parade.
"We already have community groups and businesses from all across the Shire who are going to take part. There is going to be a lot of promotion around this event and there will be a big crowd watching on the day, so it is a great way to let people know what you do."
The Parade will start from the centre of Wonthaggi at 12noon on Saturday, 20 March 2010 and travel up Graham Street to the grounds of the Hospital for the Garden Party. The Garden Party will feature stalls, food, entertainment and children’s activities.
"Having a stall at the Garden Party is a wonderful fund-raising opportunity," continued Cr Paul.
"The stalls have a ‘make, bake and create’ theme and I know how popular the home made goods are."
Anyone needing more information or wanting to register for the Street Parade or Garden Party should contact Council’s Arts and Leisure Team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278). Details and registration forms are also available from Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au.
