Latrobe 2021 released for public comment

Latrobe City has released the draft of Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley, a strategy document designed to position Council and the community for 2021.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 5th October 2004 - Back to News

The draft has been developed with the input of many key local organisations, groups and individuals; along with significant input from Council. The document is currently being distributed to 526 groups in the community and a series of information nights will take place over the next few weeks to provide the entire community with opportunities to scrutinise the plan.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that Latrobe 2021 will become the vision which puts into place the direction, initiatives and performances of the Latrobe Valley – for the year 2021 and beyond.

"When completed, Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley will articulate the long term vision for the Latrobe Valley based on community views and aspirations. It will establish strategic actions for Council and the community to pursue co-operatively into the future and will clearly set objective community indicators, by which the community’s progress will be monitored and reported annually," Cr White said.

"Being a document that encompasses so many elements of our community, it is vital that Latrobe City engage the community to provide opportunities to discuss the vision articulated in the plan, and the strategies that will be adopted to get us there."

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that Latrobe City had developed an integrated planning framework to ensure that all of the actions Council undertakes, and policies and strategies that are developed, work towards the achievement of a vision for the Latrobe Valley.

"Governments at many levels are embarking on longer-term strategy plans that take change into account. It is important to do this to ensure that decisions made through the intervening years by local councils and a broad range of government departments, contribute positively to our own and our children’s quality of life. Latrobe City is at the forefront of that longer-term planning," Mr Buckley explained.

"Latrobe 2021 will provide broad future directions for the Latrobe Valley. It will become Council’s most important document and contains strategic directions, objectives and indicators by which council will monitor progress for the community as a whole. It will also drive the content of the Council’s medium term (four year) plans and future annual business plans and budgets," Mr Buckley said.

"Our municipality has many positive attributes and Latrobe 2021 is geared towards establishing a future in which all of our residents and neighbours will share and prosper. The Latrobe Valley we envisage in 2021 will be prosperous and proud of its reputation as a welcoming and well connected community. We are confident that the actions contained in Latrobe 2021 will be implemented effectively and that Latrobe City will be clearly expressing its key attributes of being diverse, substantial, vibrant and connected," Mr Buckley added.

Mr Buckley urged the community to further involve themselves in the consultation phase of Latrobe 2021.

"The full draft Latrobe 2021 document is now available on the Latrobe City website and at all of our service centres. Information sessions are being held in Moe, Traralgon, Morwell and Churchill and the ensuing community engagement will help further develop the document and eventually provide the residents of Latrobe City with a vision for our future and the steps that will take us there," Mr Buckley concluded.

The Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley information sessions are being held from 7pm – 8.30pm: Tuesday 19 October at Kernot Hall Morwell; Wednesday 20 October in the Function Room Traralgon at the civic centre; Tuesday 26 October at Churchill Football-Netball Club; and Wednesday 27 October at the Moe Town Hall. Information displays are also being mounted at a number of shopping centres over the next few weeks.

Further information on Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley is available from Tim Johnson at Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.
