No Charge Green Waste Weekend For Latrobe ResidentsLatrobe City residents are being urged to take advantage of a no-charge green waste disposal weekend being held on the weekend of Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 October. By Latrobe City - 6th October 2010 - Back to News The no-charge green waste disposal weekend takes place at the end of ‘Fire Action Week’, a Victoria-wide week of activity involving state and local government, CFA, Department of Sustainability and Environment and other stakeholders, taking place 10-17 October.
All three green waste recycling facilities - Moe, Traralgon and Morwell will be open from 9am to 5pm on both Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 October to accept green waste at no charge.
Latrobe City’s deputy mayor, Cr Sandy Kam, said the emphasis during ‘Fire Action Week’ is being placed on residents and communities preparing for the coming fire season and urged residents to take advantage of the no charge green waste disposal weekend to minimise potential for fire on their properties
"With just a matter of weeks until the next fire season, there is no time for delay. All of Victoria faces risk of fire, including communities living near bush, paddocks, grassland and parks," Cr Kam said.
"While it’s hard to believe the new fire season is almost here after the recent rainfall, the wet conditions have increased the vegetation growth and it’s vital that all residents start planning and preparing now.
"Strong winds buffeting our region have also resulted in numerous fallen limbs and trees. Council’s no charge green waste weekend is the perfect opportunity to reduce the hazard this debris may create in the coming months," Cr Kam said.
"Now is also the time to start clearing leaves out of gutters, raking up those fallen branches and getting rid of dead undergrowth.
"Much of this material including dry grass, fallen leaves, prunings and twigs can be placed in your green waste bin. However, the no charge green waste weekend provides an opportunity to dispose of additional quantities where the fortnightly collection is insufficient to meet needs.
"You don’t have to be living in a fire prone area to be affected by fire this summer, and it’s vital that everyone takes time to consider their individual fire risk. Victoria is one of the top three most fire-prone places in the world.
"Fire Action Week 2010 serves as a timely reminder of the need to work together – with your family, your neighbours and community – to be as fire-safe and as fire-ready as possible," Cr Kam added.
Latrobe City green waste recycling facilities, operated by PineGro, are located in Rocla Road Traralgon, Monash Way Morwell and Walhalla Rd Moe and are open from 9am – 5pm Saturday and Sundays throughout the year. The Morwell facility is also open from 8.30am to 4.30pm weekdays.
