Italian marble statue called 'Victory Woman' that commemorates first World War heroes celebrates century of adorning SaleStanding 20 feet tall, the 'Victory Woman', carved from Italian marble, has graced Sale for a century. Erected in 1924, the Sale and District Cenotaph commemorates World War 1 heroes, honoured by Darren Chester MP at its centennial ceremony. By news@gippsland - 21st June 2024 - Back to News Towering 20 feet high, the 'Victory Woman', carved from Italian marble, has stood in Sale for 100 years; the magnificent memorial that is the Sale and District Cenotaph was erected to honour those fallen in conflict during World War 1, paying tribute to their bravery and sacrifice.

"For almost four decades, the Victory Woman stood proudly on the corner of Raymond and Foster Street, but in 1963, it was moved to its current location after being damaged in a vehicle accident. The Cenotaph's role has been extended to recognise the service and sacrifice of all who have served in the ADF and is the main gathering place for the annual Anzac Day service." "The Sale and District Cenotaph bears 138 names and, while steeped in honour and pride, serves as a poignant reminder to generations of the tragic impact of war," Mr Chester said. Lest we forget.
