Taizhou delegation hones in on health care and educationA follow up visit to Latrobe City, honing in on tertiary education and health care provision and exploring options for exchanges, was the focus of a Chinese delegation visit last week from Latrobe City’s sister-city, the City of Taizhou. By Latrobe City Council - 24th September 2003 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that delegation leader, Mr Zhou Jia Xin, Vice-Mayor from the Taizhou Municipal People’s Government, together with four colleagues had been keen to follow-up on visits made last year during which education and health care were also of prime interest.
Latrobe City Investment Manager, Leo Billington, said the delegation had visited Monash University and GippsTAFE to learn more about initiatives linking health care with vocational education.
"There was particular reference to nursing education and the new education precinct at the Monash campus; and at GippsTAFE, general career trade skills were of great interest," Mr Billington said.
Combined visits were also made to the Latrobe Regional Hospital, Latrobe Community Health Centre and to a retail pharmacy. "This intensive program of visits enabled the delegation to comprehend a wide-ranging spectrum of health care coverage in Latrobe, including community and hospital support programs," Mr Billington said.
Cr Middlemiss explained that the Taizhou visit was most timely given the strong sister-city exchange program that existed between each city.
"The Latrobe Youth Band will visit Taizhou in January 2004 to showcase our music during an extensive week of performances. Our cultural exchanges complement other exchanges which focus on education, health care and sport, all of which form a solid basis for future business relationships to develop," Cr Middlemiss said.
Cr Middlemiss said Latrobe City’s China Strategy had identified specific areas of mutual interest, while also supporting the teacher and student exchanges that have become an annual feature of the sister-school relationships conducted by Traralgon Secondary College and Lowanna College.
"The combined interest in education and health care is consistent with Latrobe City’s China strategy. There certainly is enough interest in these areas to generate options for a wide range of mutually beneficial sister-city exchanges between Taizhou and Latrobe," Cr Middlemiss added.
