South Gippsland Shire Council update early March 2022 - Great Southern Rail Trail project
South Gippsland Shire Council's 'In The Know' is your fortnightly reminder of what council is up to at the moment, have a look at what is going on and how you can get involved!
Council is required to keep minutes of each council meeting. The minutes contain details of proceedings which may include personal information about community members disclosed as part of presentations, submissions and questions. The minutes of council meetings are a public record and can be inspected by members of the public.
The Great Southern rail trail is an important contributor to the local and regional economy, attracting a large number of tourists
Great Southern rail trail
There is a new way to travel between Leongatha and Korumburra. Along the rail trail! This section opened last week and spans 15.8 kilometres, featuring magnificent views of rolling, green hills and connects two of our biggest townships. The construction of the trail involved the installation of two new bridges, three new bridge decks and railing, fencing, drainage and gravel placement to ensure the safety of those using the trail.
Some bits and pieces still need to be finished off in this section such as interpretive signage, distance markers and furniture which will be completed in due course. Bridges in the Korumburra to Nyora section are still under construction so some parts of that section remain closed for now. It is hoped that the project will be completed by the end of 2022 which will see the Great Southern Rail Trail span 107 kilometres from Nyora to Port Welshpool.
Funding has also been secured for the expansion of the trail from Welshpool to Alberton which will increase the length to 135 kilometres, making it one of the longest trails in Australia. Right in our backyard! To keep up to date when new sections open up, visit the Great Southern rail trail projects.
