Latrobe Climate Change Committee Members MeetThe Latrobe City Climate Change Consultative Committee has met for the first time following its appointment by council By Latrobe City Council - 11th September 2009 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the first meeting featured a frank exchange of views on climate change and the ways forward.
"Opinion on the cause of climate change is not entirely unanimous and this was evident through the diverse range of thoughts that were shared at our first meeting. However, we were all agreed that climate change is happening, that it will impact on our community, and we as a community can play a part in helping prepare for the effects," Cr Price said.
"The role of the climate change consultative committee is to promote the activities and leadership displayed in Latrobe City in addressing climate change. The committee will act as an advocate and sounding board for the community and other stakeholders, bringing to the attention of council any issues of concern regarding the response to climate change. As such, at its first meeting, the committee indicated it is keen to receive submissions from the community on climate change issues.
"The committee will also review initiatives and activities including reports, investigations and studies into climate change; and provide advice to the Latrobe City community in relation to the climate change challenge."
Cr Price said the climate change consultative committee comprised a number of nominated industry and stakeholder representatives together with community representatives and councillors.
Current community representatives comprise Daniel Jordan, Simon Harrison, John Lawson, Simon May, Dr Joanna McCubbin, Denise McKenna, and Jadon Mintern. Cr Price said the community representatives had been deliberately selected to reflect the widest possible range of qualifications, experiences - academic or otherwise, and backgrounds including small business, education and health.
Representatives from industry and organisations include Dr Barbara Johnson from the Yinnar branch of the VFF; Jenine Smith, Australian Paper; Simon Vanderzalm, Loy Yang Power; Dr Madhu Chetty, Monash University Gippsland; John Parker , Gippsland Trades and Labour Council; and David Willington, Department Sustainability and Environment.
Mayor Cr Lisa Price, and Crs Rohan Fitzgerald and Sharon Gibson will represent Latrobe City.
"The development of a committee focused on the impacts of climate change at a local level is timely, as the world community emphasises the ‘think globally, act locally’ aspects of ecologically sustainable development," Cr Price said.
"Many organisations and individuals are acting in response to climate change issues. All indications are that the effects will be far reaching and encompass areas such as resource availability, economic wealth and growth, social wealth and wellbeing, environmental sustainability and current infrastructure," Cr Price said.
"An overview of what is actually being planned or developed at a local and regional level is paramount to ensuring the community is in a state of knowledge and preparedness."
The agenda for the next meeting of the Latrobe City Climate Change Consultative Committee includes prioritising issues and establishing the way forward to address these issues.
