The local community is invited to the grand opening and open day at the new Traralgon Library.

By Latrobe City Council - 29th November 2005 - Back to News

The local community is invited to the grand opening and open day at the new Traralgon Library in the civic precinct, Kay Street, on Friday 2 December 2005, starting with a barbecue breakfast from 6.30am.

Latrobe City’s manager, community information services, Valma Warren said the formal proceedings would start at 10.30am, with an indigenous welcome and project overview by Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley.

"Paul Buckley will introduce the special guest, children’s author, Phil Kettle, and then hand over to Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP, to formally open the library on behalf of the state government. The state government provided substantial funding to assist in the completion of the project," Ms Warren explained.

"Following the official opening, invited guests will be taken on a tour of the new library premises. Guided tours will be conducted throughout the day, for library visitors too," Ms Warren said.

"ABC Radio will be broadcasting live from the library from 6am and members of the public are invited to a barbecue breakfast, provided by the Traralgon Lions Club, from 6.30am. Grey Street and Stockdale Road Primary School bands will be performing during the morning session," Ms Warren said.

Ms Warren added that highly respected Australian children’s author, Phil Kettle, would be conducting workshops with several local primary schools throughout the day.

"Phil Kettle is best known for his ‘Toocool’ series of books, along with his recently released series, called ‘Boyz Rule’. Although his books appeal to boys, they are also welcomed by parents and teachers of reluctant readers, as they encourage individuality, freedom of thought and positive feelings of self-worth," Ms Warren explained.

"Children will be entertained throughout the day with fairy floss, a colouring competition and a creative writing workshop, along with a special ‘You Beaut’ story time conducted by library staff at 4pm.

"For new and existing library members, there will be a prize draw held during the day, too," Ms Warren added.

Mr Buckley said that, on behalf of Latrobe City, he was delighted to see the new library facility opened.

"The Traralgon library is now a large, modern facility with plenty of shelf space, up to date equipment and technology, a dedicated computer area and a fresh new feel. Library members will enjoy their visit to the new premises and the community at large can feel proud of this facility," Mr Buckley concluded.

Members of the public are invited to the Traralgon Library Open Day from 6.30am on Friday 2 December at the civic precinct, Kay Street, Traralgon. For further details, please call council on 1300 367 700.
