One of the highlights of Australia Day will be Latrobe City’s Civic Celebration being held at Kernot Hall, Morwell at 1pm.
For the first time at Latrobe City’s official events, the celebration will feature an Affirmation ceremony where all Australians are asked to publicly affirm their loyalty and commitment to Australia by making a statement of commitment to their nation and its people.
The Affirmation reads:
As an Australian citizen, I affirm my loyalty to Australia and its people, Whose democratic beliefs I share, Whose rights and liberties I respect, And whose laws I uphold and obey.
Non Australian citizens may join in the Affirmation at the second line.
The Affirmation has been recommended for inclusion in Australia Day Ceremonies by the Federal government and has been endorsed by the National Australia Day Council.
Seventeen Latrobe citizens from six different cultural backgrounds including the United Kingdom, Republic of South Africa, The Philippines, New Zealand, Norway and Lithuania will be presented with their Australian Citizenship certificates at this year’s Australia Day Citizenship ceremony.
The presentation of Latrobe City’s Australia Day Awards will also feature at the Civic Celebration. The names of the recipients of the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year, are withheld until the official revelation on the day, so the announcement of this year’s Australia Day Award recipients will be a closely watched event.
Once again, there is free admission to the Civic Celebration at Kernot Hall, and Cr Middlemiss has urged Latrobe Citizens to attend. Entertainment will be provided by the Latrobe City Youth Band during the Civic Celebration.
It will be their first public performance since returning from their recent highly successful tour of Latrobe’s Sister Cities of Takasago in Japan and Taizhou in China just a few days ago. The City’s young ambassadors will delight citizens with a program of specially selected Australian music throughout the afternoon.
The ceremonies will be followed by afternoon tea at approximately 3pm. Contact Latrobe City on 1300 367 700 for any further information on the Civic Celebration.
The Edison Mission Energy Australia Day Heart Walk will be a feature of the Traralgon celebration, with the Latrobe Community Health Service inviting citizens to participate in a 4.2 kilometre walk, starting at 9.30am from Victory Park. For further information contact Brendan on 5136 5240.
Latrobe City has also announced that there will be free entry to Council’s three outdoor pools on Australia Day, with a family fun day commencing 12 noon with various planned activities.
The Moe, Yallourn North and Traralgon outdoor swimming pools will each be open until 6pm, subject to the normal conditions for extended hours in the evening if the weather on Australia Day turns out to be hot.
"This is an opportunity for everyone in Latrobe to enjoy three of the community’s best facilities absolutely free. Perhaps Australia Day is the perfect time for this to happen, as it is traditionally a time when many of us take time out to relax and reflect on the freedom and opportunities we are able to enjoy as Australians," Cr Middlemiss said.
For further information on the Australia Day aquatic activities, contact the Moe Outdoor Pool on 5127 2931, Yallourn North Outdoor Pool on 5167 1770 or Traralgon Outdoor Pool on 5176 3551.
