Work starts on new CFA fire station at Airport

Construction of the new Traralgon West CFA Fire Station at the Latrobe Regional Airport has commenced, with the concrete slab foundation now poured.

By Latrobe City Council - 20th July 2005 - Back to News

Latrobe Regional Airport General Manager, Andrew Stephens, said that the existing ‘rural’ CFA building was no longer deemed suitable for the vital services provided by Traralgon West’s CFA, particularly with the rapid development of the airport and nearby Latrobe Regional Hospital in recent years.

"A much more complex environment now exists in the fire station’s immediate neighbourhood that requires servicing," Mr Stephens explained.

Mr Stephens said the new fire station facility is being situated adjacent to the existing SES buildings at the airport.

"This is consistent with the State Government’s Inter-agency Collocation Committee objective of encouraging agency-sharing arrangements. This arrangement also strengthens the airport community in and around the Latrobe Regional Airport, which has recently been declared Victoria's first aviation/health Neighbourhood Watch area.

Area Manager Gippsland CFA, Peter Schmidt, said CFA personnel are looking forward to working from the larger and vastly improved and updated facility.

"The Traralgon West CFA fire station facility is positioned in a developing area, and enables a quick emergency service response for outer Traralgon, as well as providing support into both Traralgon and Morwell. The project will be funded through the CFA’s Capital Works program" Mr Schmidt said.

Mr Schmidt said that the existing rural-style fire shed at the Airport will be dismantled and is being reallocated for use in the East Gippsland Shire.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that the new CFA fire station is yet another reason for the Latrobe City community to be proud of its airport.

"Our own airport facility can boast a number of services that are superior to those found at many larger airports. The new high-quality fire station and active CFA Brigade will greatly assist the Latrobe Regional Airport Board to promote our airport as a place to do business, which is to the benefit of Latrobe City and Gippsland," Cr Lougheed said.

"The Latrobe Regional Airport Board, and all of the wider airport community, greatly values the CFA and its continuing commitment to the Airport.

"In addition to the CFA's exemplary record of service to the general community, which now spans more than half a century, the Board and airport community regard the Traralgon West Brigade as a vital element of the emergency services capability of the airport, along with the SES, the Helimed 1 helicopter ambulance and the adjacent Latrobe Regional Hospital," Cr Lougheed said.

"The Airport's strong, quality emergency services facilities also assist in ensuring that the Latrobe Regional Airport is a safe airport and that any emergency situations are dealt with promptly and efficiently," Cr Lougheed added.
