International Power Traffic School in Morwell on Wednesday morning.

Poowong led by four points to take out first place honours with a score of 644, with Cowes taking second place with a score of 640 and Boolarra a close third place getter with 637.

Some 130 students from thirteen primary schools from across Gippsland participated in the keenly contested bicycle safety competition, with Latrobe City mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed declaring everyone a winner who’d participated, as he presented three cyclists with special awards for achieving a perfect score of 85 points on the day.

Winners of the special awards were Jack Morgan and Cassie Pollock from Yarragon Primary School and Francis Meade from Cowes Primary School

For some students it was a particularly long day. The young riders representing Mallacoota Primary School in far East Gippsland, had to rise at 4.30am to be able to meet the morning deadline. Competing students also represented Yallourn North, Mirboo North, Ripplebrook, Yarragon, Buln Buln, Newhaven, Stratford, Briagolong and Orbost North Primary Schools.

International Power Traffic School committee member, John Hehir, explained that students throughout the day participated in a range of road safety related challenges. "These included demonstrating the correct way to signal a turn, how to safely enter and exit a roundabout, correct procedures at pedestrian crossings and traffic lights, and a host of other bicycle safety essentials.

"Participants were scored on their ability to complete each aspect of the challenge as well as the way they executed the challenge, such as checking over their shoulder for traffic, giving enough signal before a turn, giving way to traffic/pedestrians as required," Mr Hehir said.

"There was also some general skill testing such as balance and speed control.

Mr Hehir said all the students started their day with having their bikes checked to ensure they were completely roadworthy. "The relative height of the seat for the rider, lights and reflectors attached and a working bell were all things that were assessed. Once they were checked and cleared they could begin the challenges.

"The students who took part in the day had all completed the bike ed classes at their respective schools and had shown a great amount of understanding about the rules of the road. They had also competed in their local Bike Ed challenge. The Latrobe Valley challenge was held in August, with Boolarra taking out honours on the day."

Cr Lougheed said the Gippsland regional challenge was sponsored by Latrobe City Council, International Power, Roadsafe Latrobe and Vic Roads. "Each one of us sees the benefits that flow to our community from teaching young people road skills and attitudes that will help keep them safe through childhood, through their teens and well into adulthood," Cr Lougheed said.

The Gippsland regional finals of the Bike Ed Challenge were also supported by Victoria Police, International Power Traffic School committee members, Lions Club which provided catering on the day, and the First Track Adventure Program.

The state final is being held at Glenormiston College near Terang on Friday 12 December.
