Upgrade to Yallourn North Outdoor PoolToddlers especially, are in for some extra fun this summer, when the Yallourn North outdoor pool opens for the summer season following an upgrade to the complex. By Latrobe City Council - 28th October 2003 - Back to News The upgrade includes a major refurbishment of the toddlers’ pool, improved filtration to all pools, the reinstatement of the solar hot water system, and the installation of a barbecue.
Latrobe City’s Manager Leisure Facilities, Tony Oulton, said the toddlers’ pool is being refurbished and recoated with a process called fibre glazing, and a central rock and water-mushroom feature is being installed that emits water from fountains. "We know the kids are going to love the environment of the newly created fun area where they can splash and play," Mr Oulton said.
"While this feature will be most visually apparent to Yallourn North’s outdoor pool visitors, there is also some serious work going on behind the scenes," Mr Oulton said.
"An upgrade to the filtration system will radically change the way the pools are filtered. The current filtration system will now service the main pool only, and a separate filtration system is being installed to service the toddlers’ pool and the wading pool.
"This will improve the pool water turn-over rate and filtration, and allow for a far more efficient automated pool water chemical and dosing system," Mr Oulton explained.
Cr Bruce Lougheed said the upgrade would provide for a more reliable, safer and friendlier pool in Yallourn North for families to visit.
"The Yallourn North Pool has been a favourite venue for families from all over Latrobe City to visit, not just the local residents. The upgrade to the filtration system ensures it will continue to function as an attractive venue for many years to come," Cr Lougheed said.
"Families are attracted by the pool’s quiet location and the surrounding grassy banks where kids can play and have fun. The refurbished toddlers’ pool and the installation of a barbecue are going to be great drawcards that will attract visitors while providing a higher level of service to the community.
"The re-establishment of the currently non-functional solar heating system is another indication of Council’s determination to provide for the future.
"The system has not operated for some years, but is now being reinstated so that it can provide a more comfortable pool temperature at the seasons start. There is an additional benefit that the pools can now be heated independently," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed said Council was also introducing a number of initiatives to encourage pool use this summer.
"Council has removed the minimum temperature opening trigger, and as a result, pools will be open every day except for days of inclement weather. The pools will also operate extended hours into the evening on hotter days," Cr Lougheed said.
The upgrade to Yallourn North Pool is being undertaken through a Council contribution and a Sport & Recreation Victoria Better Pools funding grant.
