East Gippsland Shire Council will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Gippsland Ports to strengthen the informal alliance that exists between the two organisations.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 30th January 2006 - Back to News

This follows a vote by Councillors at their meeting last night to accept the recommendation of CEO, Steve Kozlowski.

Mr Kozlowski said East Gippsland Shire Council and Gippsland Ports share a number of areas of common interests and strategic objectives.

"Not the least of these are the further development of boating and other marine-based activities in East Gippsland and the fostering of economic development, tourism and recreation in the region," he said

"Officers of the Council and Gippsland Ports already meet informally from time to time to discuss issues of mutual concern or interest."

Mr Kozlowski said the MOU commits both organisations to: -

  • use their best endeavours to work collaboratively towards developing and improving boating and other marine-based activities in East Gippsland;

  • work together to foster economic development, tourism and recreation in the region;

  • collaborate on strategic issues of importance to the ports of the region; and

· provide a united voice for the region and advocate vigorously for issues of joint interest or concern.

"The agreement is intended to be flexible and dynamic, in that it stipulates that the MOU will be reviewed within six months after each general election of Council or the Committee of Management of Gippsland Ports," Mr Kozlowski said.

"It also stipulates that outcomes and performance indicators will be revised on an annual basis.
