Council Warns: "Keep Pets Under Control"

East Gippsland Shire Council is warning owners who let dogs and cats roam unchecked that they face fines of up to $210 for dogs at large and $52 for cats.

Manager Local Laws Terry Lamshed said he was becoming concerned at the increase in the number of reports the Shire was receiving about pets roaming free and unchecked.

"Owners should understand that pets are required to be under their control at all times," he said.

‘This means that they should not be able to leave their owner’s property without being on a lead."

Mr Lamshed said that complaints had been received about unwelcome cats wandering in to neighbouring properties, scrapping with other animals and creating a general nuisance.

"We have similar problems with wandering dogs as well as those that bark through the night and upset neighbours, " he said.

"There was also a recent case where an unchecked dog was run down and killed in front of a small child."

"It was sad that someone lost a pet that probably meant a great deal to them, and it was very distressing for the youngster to see it die this way."

Mr Lamshed said that pet ownership required taking full responsibility for the well-being and whereabouts of animals at all times.

"Unfortunately it is not a part time occupation and a much loved pet for one person can become an annoyance and nuisance to others if it is not kept under control."

Mr Lamshed said that Council rangers would be stepping up surveillance in coming weeks.

"We are concerned that the growth in complaints will also begin to impact on visitors to the shire and with Easter not far away we will be taking steps to ensure the situation is fully under control."
