Latrobe proud to host Bike Ed Challenge State Final By Latrobe Shire Council - 12th November 2004 - Back to News In congratulating the winners, Mirboo North Primary School together with the students from Briagolong, Cobram, Colac, Devon North, Glenrowan, Leopold, Warrnambool West and Winters Flat primary schools, who competed in today’s Bike Ed Challenge State Final at Morwell, Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said Latrobe City was proud to be hosting the event at the Hazelwood Power Children’s Traffic School.
"This is the first time that this prestigious State event has been held in Latrobe City since the inaugural Bike Ed Challenge State Final was hosted in Morwell in 1998, and it’s wonderful to see how the Bike Ed program has expanded and become increasingly relevant for training young people to be aware of the dangers on the road," Cr White said.
"The Bike Ed program is taught in many primary schools across the State and it has been praised for the positive attitude towards road safety that it instils in primary school students. The combination of practical hands-on training and the relevant theoretical activities that it offers, has helped to shape the necessary mind-frame for safety on the roads that students will benefit from throughout their life."
Councillor White said that the fun activities and rewards that are offered through the Bike Ed program also provide incentives for students to continue learning about road safety.
"Throughout the Bike Ed program students demonstrate safe cycling skills; knowledge of road laws; correct negotiation of roundabouts and other intersections; and manoeuvring and balancing techniques. It is important that these skills are taught at a young age as they will assist the participants throughout their life, whether it be the next time that they ride their bike on a busy road, or when they are older and are driving a car," Cr White said.
"The school communities taking part today have already achieved a significant level of commitment in encouraging their students to compete in their municipal event and then winning at their regional finals. These same schools have shown even greater resolve in coming along to compete in the State finals today, here in Latrobe City in beautiful Gippsland.
"Latrobe City has made an ongoing commitment to promote the health and safety aspects of cycling and pedestrian skills, and we are particularly proud that the wonderful educational facilities provided through the Hazelwood Power Children’s Traffic School, here in our own municipality, have been chosen to host Bike Ed Challenge State Final once again," Cr White added.
