Comment Sought On Performing Arts And Convention Centre StudyTwo sites have been identified as options for a new Latrobe performing arts and convention centre, in a feasibility study released for public comment by council at Monday night’s meeting. By Latrobe City Council - 11th December 2009 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan, said both options identified in the Latrobe Performing Arts and Convention Centre Feasibility Study report are considered to be feasible. However, each offers a different experience for patrons and visitors.
"The option to locate the facility in Traralgon, at the corner of Kay and Church Streets, offers a strong connection between the CBD and the facility, and recognises the historical association between Traralgon and the performing arts.
"The option to locate the facility in Morwell, adjacent to Kernot Hall and Lake, offers the opportunity of developing a destination which takes advantage of the lake frontage afforded by the site," Cr O’Callaghan said.
Cr O’Callaghan said that in undertaking the feasibility study the consultants (CPG Australia) consider they have investigated and acquired a thorough understanding of Latrobe City’s demographics and growth predictions.
"The consultants considered other key regional strategies and structure plans, examined tourism figures and trends, and anticipated projected demand in the region for the types of services and facilities to be developed.
"They also researched similar centres and facilities in regional Victoria and considered other performing arts and convention facilities in the wider Gippsland region, while reviewing existing Latrobe City facilities and plans," Cr O’Callaghan explained.
"Importantly, consultation with all key stakeholders and community groups has taken place to ensure the report reflects community expectations."
Cr O’Callaghan said the report provides options, analysis and financial impact assessments in respect of the two site options which are detailed in schematic plans and cost surveys contained within the document.
"It is important there is a clear understanding that the feasibility study for a new performing arts and convention centre discusses a project with a large capital investment of $12 million, and will attract increased recurrent costs on existing facilities.
"This study is just the first step for a project that may take considerable time to eventuate. Following council consideration of the community feedback, anticipated to be in March next year, and any decision by council to further the project, avenues of funding will still need to be confirmed before a commitment to go ahead can be given.
"Our community now has the opportunity to consider this first step, this feasibility report, and comment regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the options provided.
"Public meetings will be convened to provide members of our community with an opportunity to discuss the report; or a personal briefing with the council officer managing the project can be arranged by contacting council on 1300 367 700.
"Copies of the Latrobe Performing Arts and Convention Centre Feasibility Study report are now available on the council website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au. People can also make comment by following the links on the website," Cr O’Callaghan added.
Comment can be made on the Latrobe Performing Arts and Convention Centre Feasibility Study report until 24 February 2010. For further details contact Latrobe City’s manager cultural liveability, Paul Holton, on 1300 367 700.
